career education training

I’ve been doing my own investing for several years now (doing pretty good) and I’m interested in getting into the field as a second career. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Getting a bit of a finance background doesn’t hurt, but isn’t necessarily required. The test that all brokers must pass is called the Series 7 General Licensing Exam. You can do an internet search on it and find some materials. It gives you a broad understanding on a number of different subjects (everything from Equities, Debt, and Options to Customer Accounts and Trading Markets). If you are interested in getting into the field, do some research on the companies in your area. Some may pay for the Series 7 for you and help you with your training.

Although a college education is not necessary to be a stockbroker, but most major firms require it.

If you have good sales and people skills you can do well.

Most brokerage house Reps are paid commissions only, while Bank B/D, Insurance Co B/D and fund companies will pay you a salary.

In order to become a Rep, you must be sponsered by and work for a broker/dealer. They will provide you all the training material needed for passing the Rep test.
Most Reps have to have a Series 7 & Series 63 license. (don;t waste your time in going for a Series 6 which is for mutual funds and annuities)

You should see if any of the major brokerage firms are hiring, they’re always looking for Rep, but you need to go in as a trainee.
Some times banks, insurance companies and mutual fund companies look for sales Reps, you can add them to the list of candidates.

Another alternative is to look for a Sales Assistant’s position, these are licensed individuals that work with Reps, handling their phones, do some lite record keeping, (Sales Reps could not exist without such people). You would be salaried, with bonus by the company & the Rep, and it will get you into the business. You must be licensed, some firms will help you get the license, the same as the do for their Reps,

Go to the library, there were books about being a Stockbroker and working in the industry

    Good luck
